One of the most common questions we get at Aaron’s Designs is: “What’s the difference between DTF and screen printing and which one should I use?” It’s a great question, and the answer depends on your order size, design complexity, and budget. Let’s break it down.
What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is one of the oldest and most reliable methods of applying designs to fabric. A mesh screen is created for each color in your design, and ink is pushed through the screen onto the garment. The result is bold, vibrant prints with excellent durability.
Best for:
- Large orders (20 or more pieces)
- Designs with 1 to 4 solid colors
- Bulk business uniforms, team shirts, and school apparel
- Orders where cost-per-unit needs to be low
Limitations:
- Requires a minimum of 20 pieces per design
- Each additional color adds to the setup cost
- Not ideal for photographic or highly detailed artwork
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a newer technology that prints your full-color design onto a special film, which is then heat-transferred onto the garment. It handles complex, multi-color artwork with ease.
Best for:
- Small orders (even just 1 piece)
- Designs with many colors, gradients, or photographs
- Personalized gifts or custom one-offs
- Quick-turnaround items
Limitations:
- Slightly higher cost per unit on large orders compared to screen printing
- The “feel” of the print is slightly different from screen printing
